A question occured to me as I drifted off last night.
Does anyone know how far I would have to ride a bike instead of driving a car to pay back the energy used in contructing the bike in the first place? It just struck me that after the iron ore has been mined, tubes fabricated and welded, components made and product shipped to point of sale it might take a long time to make up for that embedded energy.
For the sake of arguement I'll suppose an £800 hard tail and a 1.6l pertrol car.

Take all those calculations and apply them to a car. Don't forget to add in the continuing consumption of fossil fuels and the infrastructure ( roads, a+e departments, oil tankers ) to support it.
Now sleep soundly.
