Are they better than 'normal' mtb wheels? Pros & cons? And who makes the best ?

Ive got spins on some of mine.

On a good stiff hardtail they are great but if you put them on anything with a bit of bounce, they dont feel their best.

depends what carbon wheels you are talking about , retro or modern ?

either. :) Just seen lots of pic's of Trimbles with them. I wondered about the wheels.
I'm not a fan of the carbon 'look' for wheels. But more info would be nice :D

Spinergy's REV-X in the titanium bike; Bought them the minute they came out and liked the,.used them in the Serotta ATX Colorado and loved the ride.

So not as light as a normal wheel? And a ti spoke wheel with good hubs is lighter & better?
But the carbon don't need truing?

My spins are much lighter than most wheels of their age.

Cant true them if they bend though....or replace the rim :(

correct,..
I would go for titanium wheels if you have the choice, with some nice hubs.
They do not need any truing because according to the builders they will bend like the normal once,...
In some cases you can replace the rim,..you can cut/saw it from the base and "clue" a new one on.

I bought them for the looks and the story back then about the strenght, and offcourse that almost nobody drove them 10 years ago,... ;)
I liked the Rev-X the best

excuse my ignorance but are the rims replaceable on carbon wheels too?

depends on the wheels, old spins apparently were, but you had to send them back to spin direct. spinergy spox are just normal rims, with kevlar spokes & carbon body hubs. original 8spox (look like 4 side on!) wheels were fairly prone to carbon damage on the heading edge & were kinda on the heavy side

on road bikes full carbon rims are fairly common, tho they're not great under braking in the wet & take a few wheel revolutions before much braking actually happens!

i dont think theres any real pros to them to be honest. when they find ways of producing them cheaper, they'll become more common on disc brake lite weight xc racer fodder type steeds.
