Rescuers spend days at sea looking for idiots like this.
The winter is chock full of idiots running up hills with nothing but Google Maps on smartphones. They are going to kill outdoor fun for the rest of us, as they soak up limited resources.
Generally, mountain biking, you can walk back out if you get in trouble, likewise most gentle hill pursuits like walking. As counter-intuitive as that sounds!
Set out in a sea kayak with no option to self recover at all, for example no spare paddle roped on, and you could be a hundred miles out before anyone is looking for you.
I don't need to link to the hundreds of examples that didn't work out so happily as the case in hand.
