In 1981, Tony Oliver was one of the first, if not the first, Person in Britain (maybe Europe) to build an American style mountain bike, apparently for his own use. The other contender for this accolade is Chas Roberts. Though according to Chas, he made a frame, not a complete bike, for a Canadian client.

He mostly made tourers - true, including a touring frame for me in 1995, which I still have and it's not for sale! However he could and did build fine racing bikes, just not that many I suspect. Good luck with finding one, Malc.
