I picked up some wheels yesterday - Mavic 238s on Shimano AceraX hubs, laced with non-branded spokes.

The hubs are nowt special - but are the rims any good?
If I spin the wheels, the rims are really true, hubs sound like they need some grease.

238s date from 1996 - 98 and are a pretty good rim.
They are similar in construction to the 221s from the same year, in that they are pinned rather than welded and have single eyelet spoke holes. The 238 rims are however 1mm wider at 23mm compared with the 221 rims at 22mm. Thus also slightly heavier. (450g compared with 440g)

217s are another rim in the Mavic line up for that period, with eylets, welded joint and a 22mm width. They weighed in at 410g and also had machined sidewalls to improve the braking surface.
The lightest Mavic rim from around that period was the 220. Just 390g with eyelets and a welded join.

All but the 238 were available with grey hard anodizing, ceramic as well as 'sunset' ano for the 217. All were also available in the basic 'raw' aluminium finish.

So, the 238 is a good quality rim which just lacks some of the features available on the higher end of the Mavic range.

The closest modern equivalent would be the ever popular XM317.

Thank you - they are marked as 559-17 - so internally 17mm, but as you quite rightly say, 23mm externally.

Cheers.
