V- brakes levers with caliper brakes?

Can I use V- brakes levers with caliper (side pull) brakes or is there a problem with doing so?

I have done so with a bmx dia compe hombre which is side pull and using with a v-brake lever.

The dia compe brake is for sale if interested
 
You may get half decent feel/modulation with levers like Shimano DX or Avids that are adjustable with them set as far as they'll go to pull the least amount of cable.
