Hi guys and gals, been away for a while but..... was driving past a shop and they had a tandem at a good price. Always wanted one, so...now I have to work out how old it is, and what it is.

I will post pics as soon as I can collect it.

First question is...when was the use of "clip type" head bearings discontinued?

Second Question...if it looks like a Sun Wasp, is it a Sun Wasp? No transfers remain on the frame.

I have yet to find a date stamp on the chain wheels, or a serial number...

Really excited about finding the story behind this Tandem

Cheers for now,

Dave

Re:

Head clip was used post ww2 more or less until existing stock was used.
In the 1930s all large makers had a tandem (or 2) in their catalogues.
Sun produced a foot pedal back brake on some, if it has one then it is Sun.

Re:

Here it is as a saw it. Cottered cranks, with grease nipples. Clip type head bearing with grease nipples. two different types of centre pull brake, plus a drum at the rear. Bars look to be old profile, steel ( later?) rims, drailliuer gears, sadly, no head badge or air in the tyres

Distinctive frame at the rear crank set....

50's maybe?

Re:

So, it begins to give up some secrets, but not many....

Serial No. is on the outside of the lefthand rear dropout...4016.

The 95mm rear brake is by Exceloo, no date stamped on it.

Five speed block by Suntour.

Cheap Shimano rear mech.

The bottom of the rear stays, and the bottom of the front forks were plated, but possibly not chrome, maybe Cadnium, slightly yellow appearance.

The frame is painted with a Hammerite like paint, but has traces of Red underneath.

Distinctive frame at the rear bottom bracket area.

Grease nipples at both bottom brackets, and at the lower head bearing (Clip type head bearing)

Fork crown and rear stay brace drilled for rim brakes, centre pull fitted at present.

If any of these features bring back a memory, please share, I would love to find out what this really is.

Cheers for now,

Dave

Re:

Few more things came to light today.

Front centre pull GB 88, Rear one Raleigh Weinmann, maybe a replacement.

Stokers bars GB stamped 59

Rear mech Shimano "Skylark"

Mafac levers with plastic adjusters

Stem Japanise incorrect size as it is in a sleeve, 7/8" needs to be 1"

Do these point to any time or manufacturer?

Dave

Re:

More info, but no conclusive I.D yet.

Mafac levers are 70's

Crankset is Williams stamped ZH for 1967.

I keep looking on ebay, but have seen nothing quite like this one yet. Seems to have been thrown together with what ever was about at the time. Still no badge or transfer ......
