I picked up a nice vintage racer yesterday , though the wheels are knackerd the distance between the rear dropouts is 125mm , I could spread the frame to get a 130 hub in would this upset the gears , they are friction , it is a shimano 600 arabesque group set

126mm hubs are very common and easy to get hold of, or do you already have a set of wheels with a 130mm hub that you want to fit ?
 
It should not 'upset' them - you may have to adjust the high low settings - friction should work with almost anything but how many gears and what mech are you using - these may cause problems.
