Putting on modern day wheels on a retro bike

My current bike has an OLN of 126mm.

I can spread it enough to fit a 130mm hub in.

However my issue is the the original wheels have a 4-5mm spacer on the drive side which allows the chain to run on the smallest sprocket.

However on a modern hub I dont have that space and putting spacers and re dishing wheels is beyond my ability.

Is my best option just to run the 130OLN with 9 speed, but not use the smallest sprocket?

What have others done?

thanks

Loosen the lower adjustment screw out until the rear mech's top jockey is in perfect alignment with the smallest cog. This may involve having to take up some slack in the cable. Next shift all the way up to the largest cog and turn that adjustment screw until the jockey is directly below that one. Now try shifting into all of the gears, if you are lucky then it will work otherwise adjust the cable tension until the chain runs smooth on all cogs.
