Retro Newbie
Hi all, Im about to build a vintage early seventys road bike. Could anyone advise when 6 speed blocks became available. Also im trying to source some 700c rims with 40 32 spoking ?

Cheers Dave

I recall that Tom Simpson had his bike upgraded from 5 to 6 speed during the Tour de France in the mid 60s because he saw another rider had done so.

Certainly by the early 70s 6 speed was the norm for pro racers.

For mere mortals a Suntour Winner 6 speed block / chain would sit in the space of a 5 speed in the mid 70's.......working in a bike shop I had the choice but stuck with the tried and tested regina oro and silver Wipperman chains.......being a tart :)

What OLD are you running ?

Shaun

I had a 6-speed around 1966/67. Couldn't work out why it wouldn't work very well but back then I hadn't heard of hub spacings, dropout widths etc. etc. I think I ended up taking the smallest sprocket off and using it as a 5-speed training block. Compact 6's appeared quite a bit later I think.
