temporary SS hack

Can i throw a chain onto my Mongoose Amp project without a front and rear mech installed, just so I can have a ride on it?

I haven't gotten everything sorted on it yet, but I'm itching to see how it feels to be on it.

You can also use any rear mech you may have laying around as a chain tensioner w/o cabling it up.

if its not a urt suspension bike (which amps aren't) it wont work as the chain length changes with sus movement. need to run it through a rear mech as this is sprung so keeps the tension.

k, i can run it through a spare rear mech for now. so it be set to the smallest cog at the rear, and say the middle chainring up front?

Middle-middle or whatever keeps the chain straightish would probably be best

Two solutions to dial in a different cog:
1 Turn the lower limit screw right in.
2 Use about three inches of old gear cable - fit the end stop into the adjuster, clamp as usual, then wind the adjuster out and bingo the mech moves!

thanks for the tips. onto another question.

do i determine the chain length with the method of wrapping the chain on the largest rear cog and outer chainring plus 2 links? or does that not work with this type of rear suspension?

Personally I'd add another link or two just to be on the safe side - the last thing you want to do is bust the chain.
