Aheadset with low stack height? Recommendations.

The Manitou forks that I love which are in my 856 have a steerer which is about 8mm shorter than I can safely use offroad. My question is: Are aheadsets all the same stak height or are there ones which are significantly shallower than others. The current FSA one seems to occupy a far bit of steerer. Can anybody recommend anything? If it enables me to carry on using the forks money is no object.

road headset possibly? what stem are you running? different stems have different stack heights also - ringle zooka is about the lowest i know

Try Campagnolo - they always seem very low. The Record ones are bombproof and also have a grease port in the side, which is handy.

I was looking at "semi integrated" ones as they looked really low but didn't know if they would be compatible with the frame?

FSA Orbit XLii are about as low as conventional headsets get, 27.4mm stack height to be precise
