OK it was getting dark and the mrs was nagging me about finishing up and coming in for the night, did a stupid thing, managed to cross thread the rh pedal thread into the crank. What is the cheapest option?

  • Take it to the LBS and pay through the nose to get it rethreaded?
  • Buy a tap and dye set for about £15 and have a go myself? Anyone know what size I will need?
  • Buy new cranks? The old ones are nothing special, square tapered BB Deore 2004

Size thread is 9/16" x 20 pitch. If you buy a tap, chase it from the backside.

If the threads are junk, an automotive machine shop can install a helicoil. Better than buying a new crankset.

The killer is the left side crank as it is left hand threaded.

You've got the pedal out yeah?

You may be able to save it. Screw the pedal in from the other side and it might just chase the threads out. Then try it again from the correct side.

Worth a go.

Take to LBS and let them use a proper tap and maybe save it.

Or:

Cheap mans tap:

Get a bolt the right size and hacksaw a slot down it, use it as a tap. No guarantees...

Have you got an old pedal with a longer thread? Or a scrap pedal and grind off the shoulder, then run that through.
