Possibly do, though theyre made of pressed steel and might be a bit inaccurate with lots of fettling.

They look like they could potentially damage the part they'll be fitted to and twist under load but if just popping to the shops and back, they'll be fine.
 
They're knocking these out for under two quid on fleabay uk. Looks a little flimsy for knarly radness.
 
i've always wondered about the physics involved.

If the bike frame was never intended to take disc brakes - and therefore isn't strengthened here - would fitting something like this potentially put too much stress on the frame and cause it to buckle/bend/snap?
 
The forces are limited by the tyre adhesion, after which it skids of course.

Before you get any permanent bending the stays flex (or in this case the bent tin converter) and the calliper goes out of alignment during braking. Framebuilders' conversions usually add a cross piece between the stays to stiffen things up.
