Help please. Can I run a 9 speed KMC chain on my STX RC 7 speed chainset? A sticker on the 1995 chainring says "Shimano HG chain only" - but I guess things have moved on a bit over the last 20 years.

Thanks - looks like it'll be a 7/8 KMC chain. And that sticker means very little these days.

9 spd chains work wonderfully with 6/7/8spd systems oh and dont forget 9spd too!
The inside is the same width with the outer skinnier for 9spd systems.

This is interesting: well to me it is. So if I'm struggling to find NOS rings for my 7 speed STX RC chainset I could swap to a 9 speed chainset with a 9 speed chain and keep the 7 speed screw-on freewheel at the back. Am I right or am I right????

Yes. Sometimes there can be a bit of extra chain rub but if you have a good chainline it wont show itself
