Rear mech on Orange P7 problem

GParry

Retro Newbie
I've built up an Orange P7 from about '93-'94 with a XTR M952 rear mech. The problem is the rear adjustment screw does not sit on the tab on the dropout. This causes the mech to spin round and the upper jockey wheel hits the cassette. I refitted the mech a couple of times in case it was something simple, but the problem still exists. Having never seen this happen before, I can't figure out what is wrong. Any ideas would be helpful.

That's the B screw we're looking at. It should butt up against the hanger, as in picture below. Either part of the hanger has broken off or else the tab on the mech itself is bent.

Thanks, but whatever I do with the B screw, it still doesn't sit right. It is too low and slips off the tab as soon as you put any pressure on it. Like I said, the tab on the frame looks ok. It's a bit worn, but should still do it's job. I've been working on mountain bikes for 29 years, and never seen this happen before!

The tab that the screw passes through is probably twisted slightly.
I've seen it a few times.

Doesn't have to be twisted far if the frame tab is slightly worn.

Re:

one possibility is the b tension assembly spring has an issue because it looks like the mech has no tension against the hanger, so it could be the spring or the assembly that holds the tension of the spring, i have seen these crack before, spares are available though.

Re:

In my time I've had a few xtr rear mech that have been damaged in this area. From your pics, I'd say the b clamp assembly is bent. Hard to tell exactly, but I've attached a couple of pics, one of a mech mounted to a frame and another of a spare I recently removed from a bike and was working fine.

If you compare the pics against yours it looks to me as though yours is bent a bit. All is not lost as you may be able to bend it back (gently and slowly to avoid stressing it and it breaking), or you might be able to use a donor mech for the same part. I seem to recall doing this for an xtr mech but can't remember what the donor mech was, possibly an lx?

Cheers. I would never have thought that a XTR mech would have a weak part! Glad I didn't buy it new.

I'll try to bend it back into place in the next few days and let you know how I get on.
