when you hear of the taxes levied at imports from outside the EU is there a simple way of calculating this.
i.e is it the VAT + another 10% of the value of the goods or what?
really struggling and its putting me off buying from the US as i dont want to get stung,
can someone please clear this up as best they can :?

if you go to the search button up in the menu and type in 'tax import' and search for all terms there are quite a few threads that might help you :D

Dave,

For buying from the states, basically the law goes like this...

UK Customs add up the value of the bike + the cost of shipping + any insurance on shipping and tax that total at 14% (in the case of a bike - regardless of 2nd hand or new status).

Then they add that total up and tax the new figure at 17.5% for VAT.

Then when you've paid it, they release your bike and let you go home and ride.

Outrageous. But pretty much unavoidable.

And the gift declaration by the sender only counts up to a value of £36.00.

Has to be a pretty special bike.

Hope this helps.
