There are BCX 1, 2 and 3 rims. Were 1 & 2 front and rear specific respectively and 3 suitable for both or have I got it wrong?

Sounds plausible to me. My KHS was spec'd with a 1 & 2 so perhaps they were front rear specific.
/ also note I'm looking for a 1 & 2 so if you have some going spare please let me know!

BCX1 was intended for front use partnered to a BCX2 on the rear. BCX3 were a low end single wall rim, used front and rear on entry level bikes. For example check out some of the mid 90's Kona catalogues as many bikes came spec'd with these. The rims themselves were manufactured by Weinmann..........

Yeah that sorts it. I've got 3s with STX RC hubs and DB SS spokes on a '96 (I think) Jamis Aurora. Thanks Kult Friction.
