Replacing rims - advice needed.

Re:

Agreed, take Mavic's number and add around 3mm for the ERD.

I can't find any information directly on the Mavic website, only on some stockists and wheelbuilding web sites, and their ERD measurements range from 540mm, which is too small, to 545mm, which I reckon I could get away with. :?

Most come in (in my experience) about 543mm (XM517, XM317). The M217 I've done seemed a little smaller (more like 540) as the 317 rim I laced as a replacement left a little thread on the spoke end. M231 / MA40 are bigger at around 546-548.

If you end up with too much spoke thread, swapping the lacing to 2X instead shortens the spoke distance by around 4mm. I re-laced a wheel with an MA40 which had been M517 in this way.

Wouldn't going 3X to 2X lengthen the spokes?

radial spokes are shorter than 1x spokes are shorter than 2x spokes are shorter than 3x spokes

the fewer crosses, the shorter the path from the hub to the rim
