Generally, in this life too!

Can't say I've ever noticed it. But then I rarely post about any of my bikes. They are all a varying collection of mismatched parts tailored to my needs.

I would say if a particular community around your hobby is not causing you joy, then leave it and try another one. I did this with an online community associated with another hobby of mine. The main moderator had very strong opinions about a range of topics, and appeared to be an expert in anything and everything. Further, much of the rest of the community were basically middle aged blokes with a variety of mental illnesses, but predominately depression which made the whole thing pretty joyless and miserable.

With such a huge topic as cycling and so many people from different walks of life actively interested, there's bound to be stuff that doesn't appeal to everyone -- but most people on here seem to be pretty positive. Or if they don't like it, they're diplomatic. As I see it, you don't know what kind of resources fellow posters have to draw on and this stuff can get expensive, so there's no point in looking down on others' efforts.

I have to admit I accidentally did this at a car boot sale recently, there was a box of spanners and I asked the seller how much he was asking for the cheap spanners (meaning there were some nicer quality ones in there). He took a bit of offence to it, but in my head I was just meaning to distinguish from the better ones. I wanted something shit to cut up and weld for a job, and the naff ones are what was needed as thinner.

I'd check to see if Chain Reaction have got any cheap Thick Skins left.

I've been reading through this thread and when you mentioned this I had to comment. It's a psychological trick (which they might not be aware of actually, but just know it has worked in the past) to get an individual to part with something by making them feel that they are somehow less deserving of it's ownership in some way. Unless you need to sell, walk right away, would be my humble suggestion. It's a trick and they are desperate.

I don't sell my bikes, but if I did and someone pulled that ship on me I'd give them directions to the nearest Harvester and bid them good day!

I don't know know about the belittling part but I have noticed over the last few years the collectors on Instagram ect the willy waving has grown to massive proportions with the obligatory frame to be built on the stand with another half dozen 3k frames hanging up for good measure.
