A goodie for 15 squids...

DCBassman

Retro Newbie
I've tidied it up a bit, new tyres, chain and 11-32t cassette fitted.
Marin Pine Mountain 1994.
Still haver the Specialized Fatboy tyres it was fitted with, they're in good nick so kept as spares. 40mm City Jets fitted at the moment.
On the first test ride after these updates, the RD tried to commit suicide, shedding the top pulley. I managed to recover all but one sideplate, and cobbled it all back together for a gentle ride home, using just the chainrings and 11t top gear!

As a stopgap, I cobbled together a Sora GS road mech and a hanger extender, and that worked really well. Since then, a colleague on Cyclechat has given me a complet Deore LX set, and the RD-M567 from that is now fitted and awaiting a test ride.
I'd really like to get a new set of pulleys for the original mech (RD-M737), but none available. If any of you have anything close kicking about, let me know, please.

There are downsides. The stem is too low for me, and has no adjustment range at all. I have another bike to strip, and may use that to convert this to 3x9, V-brakes, and different bars. If so, there will be some original Marin bits available. For certain: bars, stem, XT cantis. Possible: XT brifters, Mavic wheelset with purple spoke nipples!
However, the 3x9 setup I may keep as a spare set of parts.
The derailleurs will handle the gearing change, despite what Shimano says. The donor bike is running 48-38-28 to 12-36 using a 22 year old 6/7 speed Altus mech, with zero issues. With the smaller chainset on this, it should be easy.

Holy thread resurrection, Batman!
Off the road since last October. Absolutely massive spinal surgery in January, 13 hours over two ops. Hoping to start fettling again next month, riding in July. The fettling will be the conversions noted above, except I'll go to a 34t max rear sprocket, as I'm as weak as a kitten after all the cutting. Just hope it comes out of storage in good nick!

Good to hear you're on the road to recovery :)
