People were riding on gravel with the very first bicycles made in the 1800's
I rode 3 speed sit up and beg roadsters on gravel in 60's, in fact any bike we could lay our hands was ridden on whatever happened to be beneath us

Of course the Gravel Bike is a marketing concept - a frame built for drops but with a wide range of gears, good brakes and fatter tyres, often offering a higher level of comfort and fittings.

Used to be called a tourer, until invented by US brands
