Front Shifter problems on Shimano Deore LX

The YouTube video is correct, in that over time, the grease can dry to a sticky or waxy consistency. When that happens, the pawl does not move freely, and the pawl spring, which is not very strong, cannot apply enough pressure to the pawl so that it reliably engages with the ratchet teeth.

If the shifter is otherwise mechanically sound, these problems can usually be resolved with a little oil, and some gentle prodding at the pawl to free it up and get some oil into the pivot. The shifter can be stripped, cleaned, greased, and rebuilt, but be careful to document the disassembly with pictures or video so that you know where everything goes.
