Fork axle-crown mismatch, Clockworks and a MF courier mega

At some point I got carried away buying forks which with hindsight are probably unsuitable for what I had in mind. I've got a couple of 98 clockworks which I believe were designed for 440mm a-c forks. I could be wrong, mind.

I picked up a nice pair of Maguras (470 a-c) and some rigid forks sold as Orange F7s but I'm not sure (400mm a-c) both of which I had earmarked to try on the clockys but now I'm having a rethink.

It crossed my mind I could put the rigid forks on a 90 Courier Mega as an upgrade to an Ahead setup (also probably stiffer and possibly lighter) but then they are also 20mm longer than the original forks.

Any thoughts on the practicalities of having more modern/longer forks on an older frame? Will I ruin the ride?
