8 speed wheel/cassette in place of a 7 speed.

I'm confused 😳

If I have some DX 7 speed thumbshifters which have the extra fabled click wont they work in indexed mode ? Or what's the point of the extra click ?

I have a 7 speed cassette and spacer I could use if all else fails.

Fitted the 8 speed wheel in place of the original 7 speed.

A quick test on the stand followed by a test ride around the block and all 8 gears can be selected with the 7 speed shifter, it doesn't make sense. Its almost like there is an extra click.

Anyone clarify o_O

The point of the extra click in the thumbie was just to give a little extra overshift onto the largest sprocket if necessary. It's not strictly designed as an extra position.
I don't know what 7 speed shifters you are using in your last question, but remember that any shifter has one less click than gears. I have bought enough 9-speed shifters in ebay advertised as 8! (First gear has no click as you are already in it, click 1 is 1 to 2 etc).

Fitted the XT thumbshifters today, they work (as you would expect) perfect in friction mode, so as the bike is going to be used purely for touring i'll run them like that.

Thanks for the info !
