Shimano 600AX brakes with new shoes

Reetegoed, my problems were probably due to the original pads and your dual compond ones may be better. Worst problem was when it rained!!

I need to do this too, my AX pads are almost gone. Thanks, I'll get some BBB cartridges from the LBS.

Great stuff, I have been trying to get some replacement pads for my Ax 600's for ages all to no avail...which cartridge pads did you use and were they an exact fit other than chopping the ends off?

I have a few pairs of NOS brake pads for these brakes and quite a few used ones with life left. Not much good for braking mind! but if you are after accuracy feel free to PM. There was a NOS multipack of these going recently but no doubt went for silly money.

Its simple , you need to compare the cadridge brake pads wich are available with the old ones.
The lenght is no issue , its the thickness of the pads,most modern cadridge brake shoes are flatter , iow not as thick as the old 600AX 's.
You could before sliding the cadrige shoes into its groove , first install some backing material (rubber sheet mat cut to the right size) and slide the brake shoe over the backing material.

They are quite soft but don't wear that fast , they give excellent braking power!

Only one important thing : you need to be carefull to make the hole needed for the screw to lock the brake.
I used an red hot thick needle .
You could also just cut away a little part of the back,and insert the screw, its no big deal ,the screw only takes care the shoe won't be released from the brake when braking and riding backwards!

My Dura ace ax brakes were rubbish.
Gave em to a mate who gave them back as he agreed that they were.
Another mate them sold them on the bay.
Very bizzare what someone paid..

Yep, agreed as brakes the AX range is pretty poor. As a piece of cycling history, design interest and generally pretty cool retro kit to collect they score high - for me at least.
