used to always be (starting at the lowest):

Alivio etc
Deore
Deore LX
Deore DX
Deore XT
XTR

But it depends on the year of the parts as well as the current line-up is different:

Alivio
Deore
SLX
Deore XT
ZEE
Saint
XTR

I may have the new stuff slightly out of order of course :p

oh, and DXR is marketed at the BMX crowd

Saint is the only DH specific one in their catalogue, and is neither higher nor lower than any other Shimano product range - it stands alone. Very nice it is too.

I thought that mid 90's it went something like ... Circa 95 ish anyway

Tourney
Altus / Acera X
Alivio
STX
STX RC
Deore LX
Deore XT
XTR

That LX mech looks about 93 to 97ish L56?

I lost track about the late 90's so...

Cheers all, the bike in question is 2003 firemountain, I bought some hydraulic brakes from eBay and they threw in the derailleur, which was nice of them as the brakes turned out to be toss!

Didnt know if it was worth putting on the fm, but I've got a 96 hahanna to build up which has an acera deraileur ?? So at least it will be an upgrade on that
