Paint preservation

I have acquired a bike with very god condition paint for it's age and definitely want to preserve rather than resprayed. But in a couple of points the paint seems a bit bristle and is starting to flake.

What to do? A couple of thoughts:

- carefully touch up and in the flaky areas use a dot of paint to 'stick' it down (will require a pure heart and a steady hand so I may be scuppered).

- don't touch up but use a rag sprayed with WD40 or similar to inhibit rust.

I realise that both the above ideas may be rubbish and would really appreciate some input from chaps with a bit of experience/sense.

Do you mean "brittle" rather than "bristle"..........a multiple thin clear lacquer coat can seal that situation to "entombed" the paint so it simply stays the same.
