Gah, I thought I'd nailed this, it is Google photos, but I can't access the shorter URL (no right click on a Mac) and they don't show even though the images are in a shared folder and the url has the 'no?.jpg' bit at the end. I blame photobucket.

Click the mousepad (assuming a laptop) with two fingers and that give a right click . If using a mouse then CTRL + click does the same

OK, obviously I know CTRL and click is the same as a right click, and then it gives me the option to 'copy image address', but every time I do this it is still a very long url, not the shortened url you mention?

My mistake. I'd installed the google URL shortener addin for chrome. That is what gives the right click - shorten option
