Balls!

I'm struggling here, ordered a few size bearings for my Deore DX headset in 1" flavour but non seem to be right, even looked on the bikepro website and ordered the size stated..... they were diddy.

So........... what size bearings does a 1" Shimano Deore DX take, and what grade do we recommend, going loose ball instead of caged too.

Shimano documentation says 1/4" for both HP-MT650 and HP-MT651:

The 1/8" BikePro suggests is certainly too small, but 16 balls is right:

Errors aren't unknown in Shimano documents, but 1/4" looks correct comparing the ball diameter with the headset lockring, although 7/32" also looks possible.

I'd fit loose balls.

I'm guessing you didn't have the old balls to compare to?
One of those times when ye olde LBS can come in handy, you can just get your balls out on the counter for them to inspect and advise upon.
