stepped ferrules for rear mech outer - sizes?

Just wondering, are there and "standard" sizes for the stepped ferrules that go in the gear cable stop on the chainstay?

If not standard, what about more common sizes? I can't find one to fit the stop on my nortelle frame - all the ones I have are too large or too small, and measuring the hole in the stop is more or less impossible

Am thinking about filing down one that is too large, but would like to know what diameter to aim for!

thanks!

Certainly in the 70's the chainstay stops seemed to be an arbitrary size or design. Is it designed for a step down ferrule or just for an outer with a cylindrical end likje the outer less Campag jobbies.

Any pics?

Hi Shaun,

it's my red nortelle frame - not sure of the exact date, but early 90's almost certainly. Pics of the original build here viewtopic.php?f=23&t=317931

I've replaced most of the parts in the pics with campag 10 speed, and while I still have the same ferrule you can see in the pics, it doesn't quite sit correctly in the stop. Not so important with friction, but I'm not convinced the indexing will like it, and even if the gears work OK, I don't like the look of it so would like to sort it out if possible!

The stop is the very small kind, so I assume it's designed for a ferrules rather than just the cable outer

thanks, Andy

That sure is a nice looking frame even if its after my time :). Those round stops on a stalk were usually for an outer only but things might have progressed in 20 years :)

Hope you get it sorted

Re:

That type of ball shaped cable guide is used on a lot of Italian frames and is the same as my CIOCC built Crowther. I used a Campagnolo wire cable cover which has the stepped ferrule pre-fitted.

Same type as these:

They're available in different lengths but not easy to come by.

Mario will know the diameter!! :)

(edit) Forget that, he's out of stock

The Sturmey Archer 3 speed hub gear cable stop ferrules that fitted in the trigger fitted some set ups
