steerer tube threading

half cog

Am I wrong or is there some dodgy stuff coming on to the market regarding forks.Been looking for a chrome pair and had a look at some on e bay. They are threaded to within 100mm of the fork crown ( 80mm in one case). This means in most cases people will be wedging in the threaded section.I was always told that that was not a good idea and could lead to the steerer failing. Was I told right or was someone simply getting a panic on?

Someone was getting a panic on. A threaded steel steerer will take those sort of loads with no issues.
