Saw the above for sale on gumtree.....Is it worth picking up, upgrading the breaks (alittle) some better tires and using the bike as my mountain bike.

Just wondering, if anyone has experience of tyres on these sort of bikes ie thickness, Im sure this will run 26" x 1.95", what do you think the "thickest" tyre I could get on there and run as a 26" plus-mini bike?

I know not very purist which I apologies for, but love how a older bike looks vs newer ones but would like it somewhat ride-able.

PS, if anyone knows if the frame is steel or alumanium that would be appreciated. I think this is a 1997 Specialised Hardrock GX. If its Chromoly steel then that might just sell it for me ha :D

Re:

For that price buy it now. I've got the GSX version and some years ago after I'd worn out the OE I got rid of all the heavy low end stuff, hung LX all over it and made it a really nice ride. I use it a lot. Currently running 1.5 Schwalbe Marathon tyres on it for commuting duties but also use 1.95 IRC Mythos with no probs at all. You won't regret buying it :D

Re:

As above: at that price, buy it now and measure at your leisure. If it doesn't suit, you'll easily be able to sell it and get your money back.
