Show Us Your Budget Build!

Dirt Disciple
Well, after getting hold of my new £25 steed (http://www.retrobike.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=161611) I was hoping a full restoration (new parts etc). However, the constraints of family life (a wife, 11 month old and another on the way in Jan!) have meant that I need to get it done for as little as possible. Personally, It think this adds to the the fun of the build, I am hoping to get it sorted for £50 all in!!

So, for some inspiration show me your builds and let us know how much it cost you all in!

Get out now while you still can Dan - there's no such thing as a budget build  .

I'm a long-term member of retrobike, pop in now and again and then disappear for months at a time. Bought this from my local Cash Generators for £50 (reckon I paid too much  ) a month ago as a cheap commute bike but as the frame turned out to be a little too big for me, came back on here for a replacement.

It then morphed into the little Timberline, quite a transformation, but even that frame was a touch too big so now lives with another retrobike member.

A lot of the parts were bought or have now been sold on via the classifieds on here - well worth a look if you're after anything specific and top folks to deal with. Also take a look at some of the bankrupt stock on ebay (just pop bankrupt into the search in the cycling pages - some proper retro bargains to be had).

As far as my 'budget' build is concerned, well I've now got the bug back good and proper. I've spent far too much in the last month, enjoyed every minute of it and am sitting here, very impatiently, waiting for something even more tiny to appear . . . damn parcel stress . . . watch this space.

Oh and welcome - it's damn good fun! :D

I just received a early 90's Carerra frame and fork for nowt from a fellow member plus all the bits of very 2nd hand rubbish kicking around my shed equates to a build of next to nowt so far. All the bits i'll fit cost something in the past but as I dont itemise my costings I have no idea. New chain, cables and brake blocks plus a bit of grease are all I need to buy so sub say £50 including theoretical value of existing bits should be achieved. Might post pics later.

I have a GBP25.00 build ready to start. Here is the thread with my bike...

The bike is rideable now, just needs some new cables to make it more rideable if you know what I mean. This will cost money and I intend on buying bike stuff cheaply (on a local auction site)... to sell on at a small profit, so that I can fund the brake cables at no cost? (make any sense... :? ).

Also... loads of surface grime to remove including a little rust. All free to do... just the time to do it.

I plan on using all of the original gear (as the bike is in fully original condition - with Full 1990 Deore XT!!). Just a lot of scrubbing, cleaning and polishing.

I'll post in 10 years when finished

Sorry - just to justify this... (so you don't think I'm some kind of cowboy ripping people off!).

Last week I bought a bike off a local auction site for $1... yep $1. It was a 2007 Avanti Mountain Bike (Avanti is a NZ brand) and the lady had listed it incorrectly. I asked her if she wanted to re-list and she said no - fair is fair and I had won the auction at a $1 !! So.. she (the bike.. not the lady!!) will get a clean, oil bath etc and I should be able to make $50-$100 out of it... therefore I will use this money to buy new cables.

Not a great picture but this is mine- built for about £30-40 if I remember correctly. The frame is crazy light but I only really use it for riding about town and some road/training miles in the winter - if I didn't walk to work it would be my commuter!

£40 Tequesta bought from a pawn shop a few months ago...

Scraping together enough cash to buy a couple of bits then buying/selling a few bits and bobs made it into this:

The wheels were on my wifes bike, and I got some bargain £20 disc wheels for hers and pinched these. The only large expenses were the saddle (£30) and the tyres (£40) but I only afforded these by doing a bit of trading here and these on ebay, certainly couldn't afford them from my bank account.... I love PayPal!!

This little beauty was purchased for very little cash..... and needed no work at all, original tyres and everything...

Damn, I must be doing it wrong - my builds seem to start off with bargain intentions then end up costing me far too much :? . What are the tyres on that Diamondback please? Looks good 8) . I always ran a kevlar Porc on the back and white up front bitd and would like to do similar on my next build - ebay have some bankrupt stock white mtb tyres which may be worth a punt.
