Short steerer > Ahead Stem query

Is that a threaded steerer?

I too was wondering why it looks like you use a spanner to tighten it :?

Re:

I haven't taken the steerer out of the frame, however the top part of it which the stem sits on it NOT threaded. But I agree that it does look like some form of threaded headset based on that "locking nut" below.

I'll strip it down over the weekend and take some more photo's / report back!

Cheers

Re:

I had an alpine stars which had a threaded fork at the point of headset, but the top was threadless to run ahead stem. This was all by design out of the factory. Sure does look like a threaded headset.

Re:

Update on this;

I had a look on Saturday and found that it isn't a threaded steerer. It's all threadless. The "spacer" below the stem actually screws into the "lock ring" (with flat edges for spanner use) which has a slot cut in it, and thus expands when the spacer is fully inserted.

Difficult to explain and I've certainly not had an aheadset like this before.

Forgot to take photos, but basically it means that the steerer is too short for me to run my riser stem. Luckily I was gifted some other threadless forks on Saturday which have a nice long steerer, so I think I'm going to try them out instead.
