Shimano dust caps

Do you need a special tool to fit or can it be bodged? Thanks

They are for a 600 ultegra crank? I screwed them in with my fingers. I have no idea if there is even a tool for it.

Can’t get them to catch by fingers - or bent paper clip for that matter!

There is a special tool, but a pin spanner will do it, or some small needle nose pliers.

I use circlip type pliers but straight ones, just a little nip, otherwise they can get damaged.

they get chewed up over time, so I prefer the Shimano allen-type crank bolts with built in black dustcaps.

Maybe it is better to take them off before riding, if you want to keep them.. ;-)

I found two allen keys are the best and cause the least damage. The closer the exact size the better, too small and they will tilt causing damage same as pliers due to the angle. Of course, if someone has tightened them up then good luck not damaging them.

This one, Shimano TL-FC20 one end for the dust caps the other is for the slotted side of chainring bolts. Not expensive and gets a surprising amount of use, if you come against a stuck chainring bolt it does the job every time.
