rust patches on a 1992 what can i do????

Help needed! I ve been restoring a 1992 Marin Bolinas Ridge, and am delighted with the result, purists beware this isn't a true retro build as i didnt get the original stem or forks but, as with a lot of retros i got great paintwork and decals BUT have areas of rust, chain slap and cable rub areas, i really don't want to respray, i dont want to hide the great patternation but i don't want this to get any worse has anyone used any products? was thinking of rust killer?
p.s i completely recommend these michein country rock tyres at 70+ psi they really waken the beast!
