Retrobike resolutions 2025?

I feel quite good about how last year went as I achieved most of what I wanted.

In 2025 I'd like to....
-finish putting together my Curtis RaceLite 24
-finish painting and assemble my Z1 QR20 forks
-apply finishing touches to my Curtis SuperX
-make a start on my Kona Entourage project
-continue selling the parts I don't need
-get a new bike rack for the car
-try get out and ride a bit more

Non bike related.....
-work out my sailing dinghy problem, maybe sell my Enterprise and get a single handed boat instead
-get the kids into skiing or snowboarding

Hopefully going to be a good year.
A mix bag for me, but the year isn't over yet.

-finish putting together my Curtis RaceLite 24 - FAILED
-finish painting and assemble my Z1 QR20 forks - Failed, although I did buy the paint
-apply finishing touches to my Curtis SuperX - COMPLETED, it even won RBotM 98+
-make a start on my Kona Entourage project - STARTED
-continue selling the parts I don't need - STARTED
-get a new bike rack for the car - COMPLETED
-try get out and ride a bit more - FAILED

My dodgy knees have stopped me getting out on the bike but I've do a lot of sailing instead, this has helped regain some strength in my joints.

I had been thinking about selling some bikes, but I then found my unicorn which snapped me out of those evil thoughts.

Oooh update time!!

Well, I'm still waiting for my new shed... 2024 had plenty of cash-draining requirements for me. Hopefully 2025 will bring it at last.

I got and built my shed - I love it!

I'll probably need to move a few bikes on in 2025, especially if I want to bring more in.

No bikes have been moved on - fail

I have 5 or six project ideas, but need space to do them.

I have the space and have completed 2/5 projects - three others on the go

Ride more and enjoy what I have is easy to say, but I've realised that restoring bikes and riding bikes are actually two separate things I enjoy.

I did ride more this year, mainly cos it didn't rain all summer like it did in 2024.

My stretch goal for 2025 would be to go on a frame building course and learn how to filet braze properly....maybe I'll fit that in.

Yeah, no. Didn't manage this, maybe next year!

Ive got rid of a few more bits...

Plus I joined a local touring club in Jan... so im ave 100 miles a week now...which is fab....their weekly rides out are over half that...which helps get my total up and provides much needed motivation.

I've also signed up for my first Audax in a few weeks...really looking forward to that.

Ive also gone over to the dark side as i suggested above and have built a "modern" bike...all be it with a retro twist......annoyingly I really love it....bugger!

I think reflecting on my achievements is appropriate as the year draws to a close.

-finish putting together my Curtis RaceLite 24 - COMPLETED and very pleased with the results
-finish painting and assemble my Z1 QR20 forks - COMPLETED, just need decals
-apply finishing touches to my Curtis SuperX - COMPLETED, it won RBotM 98+ but still tinkering with it.
-make a start on my Kona Entourage project - STARTED, now a 2026 project
-continue selling the parts I don't need - STARTED, but need to sell more
-get a new bike rack for the car - COMPLETED
-try get out and ride a bit more - FAILED

On the sailing front I did win some awards for winning some of the Sunday races.

My Arrow has turned into a bigger project that originally planned, but it's nearly complete.

Only thing thing I need to do now is start riding all these bikes.

I tripped over a BMX frame carrying the Christmas decorations back to storage. I then put my back out trying to navigate around some boxes of parts that are set aside to be cleaned up and go back on their respective BMX frames. Bloody place is a mess.

Bloody place is still a mess, but a little better than it was.

I'm not sure if that means be smarter about how stuff is put away, stored or displayed - or if things need to be sold off. My head says the latter, my heart says "you'll need that one day".

I made a display wall for frames that have cracked. And I made a board which displays cranks.

In the process of buying the stuff for those, I got into an argument with the muppet at the local big-box chain hardware store over them no longer stocking imperial size bolts and long story short... I earned a ban from that shop.

I also built up a GT BMX to get that out of the way and its box of parts off the floor. And got halfway through polishing a Kuwahara KZ1 frame and fork which should be one of the next things to get built and out of the way. Should take the GT BMX to the track and cut some laps, for old time's sake.

Either way, clean up the basement and finish some projects.

Half arsed attempt is still an attempt... right?

I hate new years. It takes me until February to stop being depressed about the passing of time. At least my bikes and guitars are now a year older and therefore more collectible. That's right... isn't it?

My guitars and bikes are now 1 year more collectable since I wrote this. Winning.

Grumps

At some point in January 2025 I'm gonna get my moody arse off the sofa go out to the cold shed and cable the gears to the correct shifters (this time), then attach the brakes and get a ride in.
I can neither confirm or deny that this halfwit is responsible for the incorrect cabling, although the fact that I threw the f'kin thing in the shed in disgust during my tantrum kinda tells its own story...
I'm happy to say that I did get the Kona built up (correctly) and I enjoyed plenty of rides on it.

However, in April, June & October I bought 3 more bikes,
The Giant was stripped and rebuilt and is great fun to ride, the Stumpy is in bits and the new parts I bought for it will be used for the badly neglected Bontrager I found in October which will be next years project.
The stumpy isn't even on the back burner more like deep freeze (possibly indefinitely who knows)

Reduce the collection, clear out some stuff I don't want or need, don't start any new projects, finish projects that have already been started... I didn't manage to keep any of my resolutions, but I had a lot of fun doing it.

I think I'll set myself the same goals for 2026 😁

1) Ride more

2) Clear the clutter and sell the stuff I'm just not going to use

3) Accept that as I get older I can't do the things I used to, but that doesn't mean I can't spend time enjoying the things I can - which in this case is riding the quiet country lanes and bridlepaths on my cross bike, and exploring pubs and tearooms on the way

1) Failed. Rode less this year than the year before. Not really sure why though.

2) Done. Major clear out and lots of bits that I just wasn't going to use got sold on. Still a few bits to do, but de-cluttering has felt good.

3) Partial. In the two-wheeled context a bit of a fail on account of #1, however as a metaphor for life it's been a bit of a success and a realisation that doing my own thing is just fine thank you very much.

Oh, and I found my Unicorn. 16 years after I first joined here in the hope to gain knowledge about it and maybe even find one.
