so, having just bought yet another project, sinnetts alpinestars, the rear end had been stripped of paint because mark was gonna modify it but me being me i prefer a more normal retro approach.

currently the rear of the frame is down to the metal.

i don't really want to go down the full repaint route unless i have to so can some one give me a breakdown of the correct order to paint in. i'll only be doing the rear end.

prep, base, paint etc, how many coats of each, what to do between layers etc.

haven't painted anything myself in years

:)

I always sand the bare metal first, W+D, to give a good key.

Then a couple of coats of zinc-etching primer for a good key.

Gently sand the primer for a smoother finish, If you're repainting white, go for a greyer primer, and if the bare metal starts to show thru after the gentle sane, then add another coat, and gentle sand again. Clean off all residue.

Then leave to dry for a good few hours (or even overnight) in a warm environment.

Then apply thin coats of colour, building up loads of thin layers at a time, leaving plenty of time (at least 1-2 hours depending on the type of paint you're using). Don't try and rush the colour coat, cos you'll regret it, or get runs. If you do get a run, leave to cure/dry in a warm environment for a couple of days, then gently sand them off and repeat the top coats.

Leave to dry

apply any decals

lacquer, again, building up lots of thin coats for a more robust finsh, leaving to dry in warm enviroments between coats.

Painting in this colder weather can effect the finish you get..

Hope that helps...

If its rattly can your using let them sit up right in warm water before hand you'll get a nicer spray from the can.

.

to keep it sensible price wise i was gonna attempt a rattle can job and see how it goes.

i have wanted an alpinestars just to see if i like elevated chainstay bikes so i want to keep the price down before putting any big money in.

thanks for the advice, any recommended brands as far as the can s go?

cheers by the way :D

Been doing rattlecan paint for years - it takes time to do it right but no time at all to do it badly. Use quality branded paint. Steer clear of shop brand stuff like Wilkinsons own! even if its just for gloss black. Marmite would be better.

For some reason, the paint I get from the tip which the Americans drop off before going home is much higher quality than our own.

Its fun and frustrating all in one.

yeah if you search for $50 paintjob in google it throws up some guy painting his car with rustoleum, which sounds similar to hammerite but isn't...there were discussions on european suppliers on various sites, it seems such a scam that we get such rubbish paint whilst the yanks get paint that works.
