Pace RC35, Shimano cantilevers fouling - alternatives?

Who has an early Pace RC35 fork with the tubular cantilever brace, and what cantilever brake are you running on it?
I'm building up my bike with parts that I already have, but the Exage BR-M502 cantilevers are fouling the cantilever brace in two places. I planned on upgrading the brakes to something nicer anyway, so I guess that will have to happen now. But what is going to fit? All Shimano cantilevers from this period look pretty much the same shape, so I'm expecting the same problem unless I choose something else. So, what do you run, that works?

I used to run Suntour XC Pro OK , aslo Diacompe 987 ( really nice canti‘s !)

Will have to check old photographs to confirm...but may have even experimented with these Suntour Self Energiser brakes too.

I did see those Suntour self energising cantis a while ago, but when I read up on them some people said they're really finicky and difficult to get dialled in?

I seem to remember having this problem with M734 XT but think I managed in the end? I'll check.

The M734's replaced some non lo-pro M730's that fit fine.

Quite the reverse ime. Essentially, they bolt on the frame boss and rotate on their own cam - which means it's easier to get them centred.

I would agree with the reviewer on the sjs site re: the cable clamp side being a weakness. Mine also eventually threaded so you don't want to tighten down too hard or keep adjusting it. But their fix also sounds like it would work.
