Oh know, yet another bloomin 'what is this frame?' thread.

It's a Dave Lloyd:

Now I know that these features may well have appeared on any frame builder but all of them on a bike makes it a little more than co-inki-dink!
Added to which I knew the shop at that time and that they had a thing with Dave Lloyd, I bought one from them!

Not the same crown or blades. The mystery frame has a more oval profile.

Looks like the same bridge, but a very different shell.

Different again. Square on the Lloyd, round on the mystery bike.

That's not to say it's not a Dave Lloyd of course, but the only identical parts seem to be the seat collar and chainstay bridge, and those would have come from a framebuilding supplies wholesaler. Any builder could have used them.

The rear dropouts are the most unusual feature I can see. It's strange to see the seatstays joining so high on the dropout. The chainstays are domed while the seatstays aren't. I can't see anything like it on any of the Lloyds I've found on the site.

Do we know what Dave Lloyd serial numbers look like?

Dave Yates with a mix of lugs and fillet brazing.
I'm pretty sure it's not a Dave Yates. He always used a sleeved seat cluster.

The shop where this frame came from was a cool little shop that was the shop to go to in London in the 90s, tiny shop but held bikes like merlin, Klein, dekerf, Clark Kent and many others. This frame comes from the early nineties, a time when they sponsored Ray Eden and Jenny Copnall who rode the Beastway series with great success. Jenny rode a lovely Dave Lloyd which I bought at the end of that season and I am fairly certain that Ray did also.

The sad thing was this shops key clients were city bankers who then deserted the shop when Cycle Surgery opened in Spitalfields. The shop then went through a really tough time eventually only selling really low end bikes like Muddy Fox just to make ends ends meet, but I've heard that they've come through the other end and are doing really well again.

Pete is spot on about the shop, and I can see why his insider knowledge would lead him to think the above, however I did say the decals were a misnomer, and just because it says it on the tin... The owner of this frame (from new) is the owner of Bicycle Magic (still a cool shop btw!), but he bought it from another shop when he first started the business, it wasnt a BM riders frame.

Incidentally Ray Eden went on to be instrumental in the start up of Planet X, but was sadly killed about a month ago.
