Mobile broadband - Any good?

We're moving in a couple of weeks, and need to have a phone connected. BT want £130 for this, and for us to open a new 12month contract. On top of the call charges etc , they have recently introduced new charges for paying by cheque - £5.00 for paying by cheque, and £7.50 late payment fee for not paying within a week of invoice, despite it being a payment in advance...
I really don't want to give these shafters any more cash, so we're thinking of mobile broadband. I used a neighbours "3" dongle last weekend while dog sitting , and it was SLOOOW, but that could be our remote location. Even Vodaphone struggles to get a signal here.
Is Mobile BB any good, and are there any recommended suppliers?
Ta.

I have a vodaphone contract/dongle affair that I use sometimes...if everything is perfect it's fine....but give it some reason not to receive a signal, and it won't. For exapmle I wanted to use it in my shop but had to stand right next to the shop window to get a signal...pretty rubbish really.
Not convinced

I have a Vodaphone mobile broadband sim card in my laptop and it's pretty rubbish tbh. Even at best it's slow.

I had the same issues with BT when I moved into my house. Ended up getting everything through Sky (line, phone package, TV, broadband) because it was much cheaper to get connected. From memory the cost of connection, the equipment and the setup came in at less then £100. BT do not have the monopoly on the phone line anymore so you can shop around and play each company off against each other.

just done a virgin one for my parent and works really well in an area where ther is little broadband cabling

we have an o2 and a 3 one in our house. the 3 one is pretty good - comparable to broadband about 3 years ago. the o2 is decent most of the time but pretty slow sometimes.

we can only use them at the bottom of the stairs or on the kitchen table!

I did have 3 mobile broadband a couple of years ago.

It was truly awful. I thought I'd erased it from my memory.
But then I saw this thread and it reminded me.

Just Google search 3 mobile broadband to get an idea of how awful the service and customer service is.

Not sure about any of the other service providers.

i think it depends what you expect from it. it is better than the speed on my mobile and better than dial up (usually!) but not as fast as real broadband. it also varies massively from area to area.

our o2 dongle is ok at out house, terrible 1/4 of a mile away at a mate's but outstanding 1 miler away at grannie's

used it once but read the general stats for it, avoid for home use id say, truly only for on the go or necesity
