was out at edale today....just going a long and some guy holds a gate for me, i say you really should wear i helmet coz it only takes a small knock on the head to kill you..or worse...all i get back is the comment "im not going very fast, and i should mind my own ******* business"....well i called him a ******* twat...and said that the nhs waste millions of pounds a year on twats like him.....he made me so angry...so i rode of before i did something stupid...(i really want to try my new bear mace so badly...)..has any one else had a similar experience...with people that dont understand even the most simple principles of physics... and a attitude that make u want to puch them.. rant over!!!! :)

If I was being polite and holding a gate for someone and they proceeded to give me advice in a condescending manner I reckon I'd respond to them.

The argument isn't helmets, it's you choosing to preach to him.

The NHS also spends a fortune on broken collar bones, arms, fingers etc that people suffer when out riding. Not quite up there with serious head injuries but still a drain on resources. But you can't ban cycling because of it.

Maybe helmets should be mad the law but until they are the individual retains the right to wear or not.

And what the feck were you doing with bear mace? I imagine that's illegal, as opposed to not wearing a helmet.

.i just have strong belief that people should be made to wear them..if not for their sake but for the sake of the poor people that have got to look after them..its such a depressing job i felt like crying at the end of every day!!!!

I also think you *should* wear a helmet, but i don't think anyone should be made to if they don't want to, and I certainly wouldn't tell someone they should, unless they started a conversation along the lines of...

"hey, do you think i should wear a helmet?..."

If you're going to use the 'for the people that have to look after them...nhs etc etc' argument then I would think you'll also be out on the street telling people not to eat that *insert bad food of the week here* or to stop smoking etc.

I think we just need to accept the fact that a lot of people do decide to to things that might be detrimental to their health, but that is their choice and lets face it, helmets have been around long enough that people know about them, if someone isn't wearing one then they have probably chosen not to for a reason rather than just never having realised it might be a clever idea to protect ones bonce from the pointy bits of scenery we inevitably hit.

short of a personal experience or proxy experience via friend/loved one you are very unlikely to change their mind.

anyway, that's just my two pence worth.

Its not the law so he doesn't need to wear one simple as that and you have no right to demand he doe's. Also maybe you are in the wrong career if you cant deal with what you see at work without getting emotional on innocent members of the public.
