Fixing Technogen Quantum Shifter failure

So, finally started to cable up the San Andreas with the Gore cables to the Technogen Quantum shifters. All went well and the shifters have a lovely action. Rigged up the front mech did a test shift and...nothing happened, had a look at the shifter and found this
Now these shifters were NOS...the part that the cable threads through is totally inadequate in terms of the amount of material ( I imagine that this may have been the reason they were short lived)...I would really like to re-engineer this bit ( I imagine the rear shifter may go the same way), but need ideas of how to go about it.

Brass....now there's a good idea, a friend of mine makes mini steam engines and may be just the man...thanks for the inspiration

I was thinking that too as it's way too thin

Not yet not had chance to go and see him
