6 Speed Freewheel Choice

I'm going to need a wider ratio than 14-21 when my bike's finished. It has '81 Super Record so 6 speed, italian thread. Looking at getting a 13/14-28 (26 would be easier to find by the looks of it but a bit too high with a 42 inner for the intended purpose).

IRD Classica, reviews of the latest version seem fine, easy to get hold of but with ramped teeth which I've read some don't like with friction shifting, which I have. Is there any problem with width as they're also for indexed?

Suntour Winner/New Winner/Winner Pro, seem to have a good reputation, non-ramped, harder to get hold of, much more expensive, bordering on silly expensive, if new.

I assume if I'd be OK going with an ISO or English thread FW as long as I stick to it.

Which would you choose or would you choose something else?

Thanks.

You need the right threaded freewheel to match your hub thread, if in doubt about suitability check "sheldon Browns" website, it has all the details.

I did read and, as I understood it, you can basically swap between the different threads once as they're so close in dimensions, then stick with whatever you've chosen. So I could put English or ISO threaded on as long as I continued to use the same in future. Or did I misunderstand?

Hi,
You understood correctly but - if I were you (and I ain't) - I'd go for an Italian threaded freewheel. There are quite a few good Regina freewheels out there (look at ebay.it) or other EU Ebay sites. I picked up a VG NOS Regina Extra BX 14-28 thru Ebay Germany last October - quite expensive at €65 - and a NOS Regina Synchro 90 13-21 (for the easy rides ) for €35 thru Ebay Italy.

I reckon Regina freewheels are good value and they will work well with friction shifters - better than with index shifters.

Look around - and good hunting :)

There are some dura ace freewheels around with excellent shifting quality, some people are asking silly money but in the last 12 months I have bought some NOS for between £25 <50. Also try Hilary Stone, he has some regina nos.

Thanks will look. Hilary Stone doesn't have anything wide enough in stock. I was assuming I was looking for a standard spacing 6 speed, so would a compact/indexed be OK too, not too narrow overall (freewheel front to back) or more fiddly shifting?

Compact is not a good choice for 6 speed friction - you'll then need a a narrow chain designed for index shifting. No comment on Hilary Sytone but have heard good and bad about the outfit.

Here is just one link:

Just went in to Ebay.co.uk and asked for Regina freewheel 14-28 :D
