2020 specialized stumpjumper rear thru axle

I moved my sons stumpy out of my way in the garage and felt that the rear wheel had a small amount of play in it.

I checked the rear thru axle was tight and it was. I then removed the rear wheel to see what was going and and it looks like the standard axle has some play when placed back in the hub. As this was the same movement I felt originally. I did get the verniers out to measure and the axle is 12mm but when I move it around in the vernier jaws it wasn't round as it went from tight to loose.

Even replacing everything and tightening the axle as much as I dare I still feel the same movement.

So I want to change the axle for a new one (148x12mm) but specialized ones come with a cone washer.

Does that washer clip off and be reused or do I need to buy an axle with that cone washer already on. I don't really want to buy another specialized jobber either.
