Just had a thought on your former hub shells, did you get them polished prior to anodising? And then ask the anodiser for 'bright black'. That's how mine was done.

I used a 'backstreet' home anodiser so to speak.

And now it's black..... and indeed now to find a reputable wheelbuilder in Leicestershire, erk!
