GSB's Whyte PRST-4 build

Awesome thread, glad I found this trove of information.

Got two of these bikes; a PRST-4 I bought new back in 2005 (Ben Hayward Cycles), and a JW-4 I bought for secondhand for spares a few years later. Unfortunately they spend most of 2005-2015 unused due to health reasons, but I fully rebuilt both a couple of years ago. Curiously its the JW-4 that gets most of the riding these days. I'm in Colorado now, and get plenty of comments about these bikes.

If anyone's interested I can find my rebuild notes; one of the biggest items that I remember is carefully shimming all the front bearings - eliminating almost all of the front-end noise.

Biggest issue are still the shocks. suggestions on (i) the best (Fox?) shocks to pick and (ii) setup appreciated.

I have a JW4 with Xfusion, which are really noisy over bumps, and a PRST4 with Fox, which are great.

Hi GSB, I have been following your amazing thread as I am in the market for a PRST. I guess you are not looking to part with yours having put so much effort into it? Cheers

As a business associate of mine once said, everything is for sale. At the right price... He’s a little more mercenary than I am though, I’d only asked him how his wife was...😳

Anyway, the bike is a thing of wonder, and I’ve poured a great deal into it. It’s bloody lovely to ride and to look at. It’s the bike I always promised myself and since I completed it I have a) not wanted any other bike at all, and b) not ridden it... It’s hanging in a bike bag in my cupboard, hooked up alongside my similarly unused wheelsets, spare tyres, and my wifes bike. It gets an annual shakedown, shocks and tyres aired up and a ride round the block to make sure everything is still in good order and then it goes back in the cupboard. the last time I rode it in anger must be 3 years ago....

Make me an offer, what’s the worst that can happen?

Thanks for the quick reply, GSB! I cannot send you a direct message so could you please send an email to me with a current spec overview of the bike and some pics?

Thanks!

Spec, condition and equipment are exactly as detailed and pictured on page 4. I’d be surprised if it’s done 50 miles since then, and half of those would have been on the other set of 26” wheels...
