1994 Kona Fire Mountain 700c conversion

yes. and now i'm eyeing off all the old mtb geometries with intent to put on 28" wheels and maybe even drop bars. next project is going to be similar treatment for a 2004 norco bush pilot, destined to be my kids' high school commuter, though its an Al frame with disc tabs so no welding for that :)

1994 Kona Fire Mountain 700c conversion

i use a cheap schwalbe tyre for my commuters - cx comp - and keep a few pair of 35mm on hand, so thats what it got! theres still a bit of room down near the bb, but probably wouldnt push it past 41, and besides this will almost certainly never see much real mud in the next few years - its...

1994 Kona Fire Mountain 700c conversion

rebuild was for 700c - it spent a long time at a localish bike builder's having the v-brake/cantilever posts moved an inch or so further out - just grind off the originals, and braze on new. original setup was 26" with ~2" tyres, so theres plenty of room. the new fork is a surly long haul...

    Kona Kilauea 1994 Frame Rescue!

fair play, i took a good hard look at the fire mountain before modifying it - those 90's konas were pretty great as they were, but alas nudging 50 makes rough trail rides without suspension a sure recipe for not getting ridden - its back in my mates hands and he's put a hundred k on it already...

    Kona Kilauea 1994 Frame Rescue!

whats the plan for rear brakes? looks like you've got bigger than 26 and disc at the front only for that temporary setup? i posted a 94 fire mountain 700c conversion a few weeks back where i'd had the rear brake boss moved out an inch, while also replacing the fork and it came up pretty well...

Re: as for the drop bars, they did make a good look IMO, even if they had the boy at full stretch

1994 Kona Fire Mountain 700c conversion

Re: tried to use as many original parts as practical - elbow grease mostly, but that beercan shim took much longer to think of than i care to admit. the original fork - a project two with velocity stem - are now oficially retired to the trophy wall (well, the wall of mates workshed at home)

1994 Kona Fire Mountain 700c conversion

Thought this might be of interest here - Back in the 90's a few mates and i spent some time in the canadian rockies, some of us came back with our future wives, but one came back with a '94 Kona Fire Mountain. fast forward a few decades and the much loved but also much abused kona was on its...
