Thanks for the advice. I think I'm going for the new rims. I'm sure I won't get any problems with tyres plus the original ones are ridiculously heavy so I won't miss them much either.

The tyres that were on the bike did have a seriously strong bead on it. And the tyres I tried to fit were also really flimsy folding tyres so I think you could be on to something there. Any recommendations for a new set of tyres?
